The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

One male and one female got detained at the site and one more individual who fled after the incident was found shortly later. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene revealed the structure turned into a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member triggered the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast included eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a story above the access point and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to Italian media, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the line of duty.
