Kalimuendo Scores as Nottingham Forest Claim Sentimental Victory Against Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted through the ground as Forest fans celebrated a further success against Malmö. Much has transpired since Francis's winning header secured the continental trophy in 1979, but Forest still cherish those memories. Similarly, major shifts have taken place in the five weeks since the manager took charge, with the team appearing refreshed and securing a convincing win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the Europa League.
Gaining Momentum with Another Consecutive Victory
For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for nearly a month after ending in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy gained from last weekend’s success at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s historic success in spirit, the encounter itself was free of any real jeopardy or jitters.
This was an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive clash between the teams since the showpiece event over four decades past.
Forest fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of that era by providing them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from then were also present. The two clubs enjoyed a meal together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and their teammates received a rousing reception when they gathered on the field 15 minutes before kick-off, and a characteristically superb display was unveiled in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“May 30, 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left,” read one part of a large banner, in capital letters. While no one required a reminder of what happened next, the rest was unfurled as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second brilliant display showed Brian Clough observing events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.
Control from the Outset
So, the hosts had drunk in those beautiful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment the forward fired an attempt off target inside two minutes and established a two-goal advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who joined the club aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defence led by their own homegrown skipper, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The home defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a opponent and into the path of the midfielder, who finished right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his first goal since March.
Another Strike Seals Dominance
Yates was involved in the team's second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his free header parried by the shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the rebound from point-blank range. James McAtee, the playmaker given a rare start and only his second appearance since September, was the spark, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned wide off the back Rösler, son of former Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic also previously had a strong header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
Malmö’s Struggles
This was the Swedish side's first match since the domestic league ended on 9 November, and they struggled to equal Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a effort on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from 30 yards. It was one of those nights. The manager, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, made multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at Anfield recently, when they also scored three goals, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the final period.
Smooth Evening for Forest
It turned out to be a hiccup-free evening for Forest. The coach could take off Murillo with the match already boxed off and later introduced 19-year-old defender Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the present squad showed they are able of producing of excitement, too.
